KGHM Unveils Bold $8.55 Billion “Strategy 2055+” to Lead Global Copper Market

KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., the Polish state-controlled mining powerhouse, has officially launched a sweeping new investment strategy aimed at fortifying its position as a global leader in copper and silver production. On July 3, 2026, the company announced “Strategy 2055+,” a long-term roadmap underpinned by a commitment to invest over $8.55 billion by the end of the decade.

A Vision for the Future

The “Strategy 2055+” initiative is designed to transition KGHM into a modernized, multi-raw material industrial group. As global demand for copper surges—driven by the energy transition, the rise of electric vehicles, and advancements in artificial intelligence—KGHM is positioning itself to capitalize on the “red metal” boom while maintaining its historical strength in precious metals.

Key Targets (2026–2030)

Production: Maintain an average annual output of 730,000 tonnes of payable copper and 1,290 tonnes of silver.

Profitability: Target an average annual adjusted EBITDA of 12 billion zlotys, with an EBITDA margin of 25.6%.

Infrastructure: Construction of a new domestic mine, internally referred to as “KGHM 2.0.”

Sustainability: Heavy emphasis on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals, including the integration of artificial intelligence into mining and smelting processes to drive efficiency and lower the carbon footprint.

Strategic Focus: Balancing Domestic and Global Assets

A cornerstone of the new strategy is a refined balance between local operations and international expansion.

Core Polish Business: Approximately 80% of the planned $8.55 billion investment will be directed toward Polish assets. The goal is to secure long-term ore supplies for domestic smelters, thereby reducing logistics costs and insulating the company from the volatility of purchasing external materials.

Global Footprint: The remaining 20% of investment will focus on optimizing and expanding operations in Chile, the United States, and Canada. KGHM’s international segment, which includes the significant Sierra Gorda mine in Chile, has become a vital contributor to the company’s resilience, generating nearly half of the group’s EBITDA in 2025.

Recent Business Moves

KGHM’s new strategy follows a period of aggressive evaluation and market adaptation. CEO Remigiusz Paszkiewicz has been vocal about the “no point in waiting” approach, noting that the company is actively scouting for takeover targets in the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

Recent operational highlights include:

Supply Security:Management is focusing on securing stable, long-term raw material supplies to feed its Polish smelters, viewing potential acquisitions and partnerships as a way to bolster financial stability and operational independence.

Efficiency Gains: KGHM reported that its first-quarter 2026 performance was bolstered by historically high metal prices and operational improvements, with the company’s international assets playing a major role in its overall financial health.

Technological Integration: The company is doubling down on research and development, allocating roughly 2% of its domestic capital expenditure to innovation, with a specific focus on new extraction technologies and scrap metal recycling.
